The Arusuvai has landed!

The Arusuvai Friendship Chain has arrived at my door! Thank you, dear Latha.

I tried my best to guess what it was, and could not :D Can you help me?! What do you think it is, and what would you cook with it? The person with the wildest guess will get a surprise ingredient from me (er...if you live in the US, that is) :) This little drawing is closed...but check back for two "winners" later.

Sorry, but there is no way the heady aroma of this powder can be transferred through cyberspace. Google is still working on that!

I'll be playing with this surprise ingredient over the weekend, and will come back to tell you all about it. See you then!

  1. I'll take a wild guess -- it looks very much like the sambar powder I've been playing with in my own kitchen.

  12. Sambar powder? Idli podi? Garam masala?

  13. Bisi Bele Bhaat (Masala) Powder or Vangi Bhaat Powder

  14. I am going to write the first thing that came to my mind(after thinking a bit, i had few more thoughts, but i will ignore them). It looks like khara pudi from North Karnataka. Khara pudi (or something like that they call) is basically chili powder and garlic mixture(i guess). Which they use in all their dishes in the place of chili powder.

  15. I think it is paprika.Would love to add it to my vegetarian chili.

  16. I'd have said podi too. Made with dalia, red chillies, coriander seeds etc etc. But I dont think that's wild enough :-)
How about roasted red chillies and peanuts? Mirchicha thecha!!!

  17. Bisi Bele Baath powder or Picke masala

  18. Something hot and spicy and utterly delicious! I won't bother trying to guess, even if I come from the Land of Podis! Can't wait to see what you whip up with this.

  19. It looks so much like sambhar powder but....that would be too obvious, wouldn't it? maybe it's something a tad different like pitlai powder???

  20. hey Nups It looks like sambhar powder to me!!!

  21. Its a combination of dal powders with chilli powder...Some kind of dry chutney or masala. What kind of smell does it have? Other wild guesses are red corn flour, saffron powder....

  22. Thats a good one Nupur, so many of south Indian powders look alike. Wish I could smell them.
    I am guessing Rasam powder.

    ReplyDelete
  23. seriously, that's atoughie, bcoz almmost all our masalas look like that:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. my guess is Sambar powder!! thats wat first came to my mind when i first saw it.. or mayb its a variation, say vatha kuzhambu powder or rasam powder!!!

  25. The robust color hints a masala powder, sambar perhaps? Taking a wild guess, maybe a powdered form of a chutney,( with dals and garlic )with oil to be added later?

    ReplyDelete
  26. looks like sambar powder to me! or may be rasam powder...but i trust you, Nupur, whatever you will make with it, it will be delicious!

  27. My tame guess : Dry lasun chutney made with Dry Coconut + red chilly + peanuts + garlic + is that a curry leaf at the side ?

My wild guess : Sundried Tomato + dehydrated red bell peppers + paprika ground to a powder

    Either ways, looks zhanzhaneet. :-)

  28. A tough call, without being able to smell it - biryani masala?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Actually, it looks like a powder that's got chilli powder in it. That's vague and not very inspired but my best guess.
Glad to see the Arusuvai Chain has moved across the ocean. I had fun when it was my turn. Waiting to see what you come up with.

  30. welllll.....you asked for the wildest guess :) Brick powder mixed with sawdust?? (Remember those food adulteration lessons in 'General Science' - where we were taught how mirchi powder is adulterated with brick gringinds, and dhaniya/jeera, with sawdust!!)
(PS I hope you too think this is funny )

  31. Yes, either that (sambar powder) or sambar powder! :D Even if you cannot guess what it is, I can tell you what to do with it - cook potatoes with it! Fool proof, I promise!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ethiopian berbere? Mexican chili powder? Or maybe sambar powder...I'll trust everyone else's opinion ;-) I'd be very surprised if it didn't have some kind of chilli peppers!

I'd mix it with pureed white beans, roasted garlic, and lemon juice to make a dip for veggies, or sprinkle it on some lightly oiled sliced cauliflower, potatoes, and yams, then bake them. Definitely looking forward to seeing what you make!

  33. It certainly looks like Sambar/Rasam or Bisibelebath powder....but to think out of the box, it might be chutney pudi :D

    ReplyDelete
  34. Is it Dabeli masala ?

If it was Sambar or Rasam then you would have immediately recognized it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Can't wait! Looking forward to it.

  36. Hi Nupur,

  38. Nupur, I don't know why my previous comment didn't post.

  39. Hi Nupur! I have been a regular visitor to your blog. Leaving my comment for the first time.
Tought it's fun to participate.. My guess---

    Chilli-garlic-sesmi powder?

You can use it in any curries or rice or just eat it like that with yogurt (dahi) as a side.
