Foodie Things: BBQ on Long Island

This last Saturday we finally made it to M's place on Long Island for a long-awaited BBQ. Veggies barbecues can be absolutely wonderful and they do not necessarily need to include soy products masquerading as meat! I woke up early to go to the Farmers Market and get lots of fresh veggies. My contributions to the BBQ were:
a) Paneer Tikka: I had blocks of paneer (Indian-style cottage cheese) which I cut into large cubes (smaller ones tend to fall off the skewer), plus green peppers cut into chunks. I marinated these in a mixture of yogurt, sour cream and tandoori paste, with a sprinkling of dried fenugreek (methi) leaves which just adds that extra special touch. I put the whole thing in a tupperware box and it marinated on the llonnnggg ride on the Long Island Railroad.
b) Roasted Garlic Salsa: I roasted a head of garlic in the oven at 450 deg F for 35 minutes. I minced and tossed together a yellow pepper, orange pepper, onions, tomatoes, pickled jalapenos, roasted garlic, cilantro and added salt and a spritz of lemon juice to make the salsa. salsa
We arrived in M's backyard to find a grill heating already and a table lined with bowls and bowls of veggies marinating in various combinations of oils and herbs ( all from M's garden), and chunks of tofu in a herbed chutney. We grabbed skewers and made our own kebabs, plus grilled asparagus and corn on the cob.

The kebabs were just the beginning...soon the desserts started making an appearance. J made a lovely pineapple cheesecake (she has promised me the recipe), seen on the left, sharing the photo with a summery tart.
desserts
A had just returned from India and got some amazing sweets from Calcutta...

R's grandmom sent a really unusual confection: Guava Cheese! Its a tangy halvah-like delicacy, almost like fudge actually and we all loved it...

After this food-fest, we were in a food-induced stupor for the rest of the afternoon. Here's to summer !!

Yep... it all looks gorgeous. Wish I could taste 'em! Paneer is so yummy when it's marinated and grilled, isnt it? :)

Hey yoma,
I started cooking in your kitchen :) so you have been my very first guinea pig. hope u come visit me soon and taste all the goodies for yourself.

Hi Shyam,
Yup, paneer is so tasty on the grill. it gets melty and oh so good. I love tofu otherwise but on the grill, paneer beats tofu hands-down.

Those kababs look great. Nice desserts too... Have you experienced indoor grilling in apartment kitchen? It just sucks. I have a george forman but the flavor just isn't same as an outdoor grill.

Hi Mika,
Nope, never grilled inside an apartment. I have often tried to make paneer tikka just in a regular pan but it always ruins the non-stick surface and comes out too dry :( outdoor grills just can't be beat.

Hi Ravi,
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you visit again :)
